Canadian Government Prohibits Animal Testing of Cosmetics

Updated: Jul 19, 2023

The Canadian Government has sought to amend the Food and Drugs Act as it relates to animal testing for cosmetic products. The proposed legislative amendments received Royal Assent on June 22, 2023, which means that they are legislatively approved to become law.

Prohibits Animal Testing of Cosmetics

As it relates to the cosmetic industry, the following restrictions were brought into law:

  • You cannot sell a cosmetic in Canada unless its safety is established, where such test is not reliant on physically or mentally harming an animal to establish the safety;

  • You cannot conduct safety tests on an animal for the purposes of satisfying Canada’s Food and Drugs Act, or a requirement of another country;

  • You cannot make a claim that a cosmetic product was not tested on animals, without having proof that it did not happen.

If you need assistance with your cosmetics products, Froese Law can assist.
