Uprise in Lawyers Using AI Followed by Major Consequences

As we see an increase in AI use in all sectors, lawyers are also falling victim to the technology that seems to be making tasks easier. In two recent cases, the Law Society of Ontario have laid out fines and suspensions to two lawyers who have used AI unlawfully. In one case, the tribunal told a lawyer to pay the LSO $31,150 for relying on AI-hallucinated materials to challenge his license suspension. In a more recent case, the LSO suspended a lawyer’s license for 6 months for violating professional conduct rules by both relying on hallucinated materials and then later lying that she had not used ChatGPT to prepare her submissions in an estate matter.
