New Canada Recovery Hiring Program

Updated: May 25, 2023

On June 2, 2021, the government of Canada announced that the new Canada Recovery Hiring Program would be available retroactively to June 6, 2021. The proposed Canada Recovery Hiring Program would assist businesses that have been affected by the global pandemic. The assistance will be to help businesses hire employees and/or workers they need to recover and grow their business as the economy reopens. The program intends to provide a subsidy of up to 50% of eligible salary or wages for employees.

The Hiring Program is designed to overlap with the Wage Subsidy Program. The two programs overlap so that when the Wage Subsidy Program does gradually decline, eligible employers will still be able to receive support from the Hiring Program if they need to hire more workers or if they need to increase workers’ hours or wages in order to keep them as employees.

Who Is Eligible?

This program is available to eligible employers that have experienced revenue declines due to the global pandemic. This program intends to help employers hire more employees, give the opportunity to increase workers’ hours or to increase wages. This government assistance would provide employers and businesses with the certainty that they can take on new work and have the ability to hire or rehire extra employees needed for when the economy reopens in order for their business to grow.

The proposed Canada Recovery Hiring Program would be available to support businesses and their employees from June 6, 2021 to November 20, 2021. This will allow eligible employers to use the program that works for them. Eligible employers would receive support after each 4 week period of the program.

How Do I Access This Program?

Similar to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, Canadian businesses and employers would be able to access the program through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
